Common questions
What R-value do I actually need?
R-30 to R-49 for most Valley attics under DOE climate zone 2. Many homeowners here go R-38 or higher, since the cooling season is long enough that the extra depth pays back.
Is more insulation always better?
No. Past a point the added R-value stops paying for itself, and air sealing matters more than depth. We would rather seal the leaks and hit R-38 than pile on material.
Should I remove the old insulation first?
Only if it is wet, mold-damaged, rodent-contaminated, or so matted that it cannot be topped up evenly. Otherwise adding over it is usually fine and cheaper.
